Folk Art Painting (also known as Tole Painting) is centuries old and is commonly known as the 'art of the untrained artist' It was mainly used to create functional items, furniture, wedding chests, russian dolls and canal ware, but can be used to paint any type of project from a greeting card to a wardrobe.
It's a type of art ANYONE can do, it creates calm, nurtures creativity and makes you happier!
Progress NOT Perfection
The course teaches the complete foundation of Folk Art Painting but we refer to the course as "Progress NOT Perfection Painting" because we simplify the painting process into manageable steps, much like how you learnt to write.
You will learn brushstrokes, just like learning the letters of the alphabet as a child, and then use them to create designs, just like putting words together.
We focus on progress because, as adults, we often want to be 'good' or even 'perfect' before we've even started! But learning doesn’t work that way—we have to embrace being a beginner first. Chasing perfection can stop us from starting or make us give up along the way.

I used to think painting was an exclusive club I could never join. That all changed in 1990 when I discovered Folk Art during my time in Australia. From the first brushstroke, I was hooked—painting became my creative outlet and my escape from life’s chaos.
When I returned to England in 1995, I was surprised how few people knew about it, so I began teaching. Now, with over 30 years of experience—including time as DecoArt’s Artist Coordinator—I’ve created this beginner-friendly course to make painting approachable and stress-relieving.
With my niece Toni, a former psychology teacher, we’ll help you not only learn to paint but also overcome self-doubt and perfectionism. Our goal is to empower you to find joy, creativity, and calm in today’s busy world.
